BTD6 Best Hero Guide
The best BTD6 hero is the one that solves the map and mode in front of you. A strong hero on the wrong map can feel weak, while a simple hero with the right job can carry a cleaner run.

GeraldoShop microQuick answer
For easy beginner clears on simple maps, start with Sauda if the track has bends, loops, or tight intersections where her short range gets repeated contact. Use Quincy when you want a cheap, straightforward starter that does not require special map geometry. Use Etienne when the whole defense needs camo help later, and use Benjamin only in modes where extra income is allowed.
For harder planning, choose the hero after naming the job: early carry, camo support, income, water synergy, tower-family synergy, boss economy, or high-micro control. Do not pick a hero only because a tier list says it is strong.
- Best simple-map beginner pick: Sauda, when she can sit inside a bend or central crossing.
- Best low-friction starter: Quincy, when you want cheap early damage and simple ability timing.
- Best camo support pick: Etienne, when global camo coverage saves upgrades or Village space.
- Best non-CHIMPS income pick: Benjamin, when the run rewards economy more than early popping.
- Best active planning pick: Geraldo, when you are ready to manage shop items and late-game utility.
Choose by map shape first
Hero power changes a lot with map shape. Sauda is much better when bloons pass through her small range for a long time. She is much weaker when the track is split, straight, or too far from a good central placement. Captain Churchill has a different version of the same issue: long lanes help him use straight-line damage, while awkward bends and late placement can slow the plan down.
Water maps change the decision again. Admiral Brickell needs water placement, so she is a real candidate only when the map gives her useful water and when your plan includes water towers that benefit from her style. On maps with poor water access, forcing Brickell usually creates a placement problem before it creates a damage solution.
- Loop or bend-heavy beginner maps: Sauda gets more value from repeated close contact.
- Open lanes and simple early rounds: Quincy is easier to place and easier to understand.
- Water-centered maps: consider Admiral Brickell if the rest of the plan also uses water.
- Awkward multi-lane maps: favor heroes with reliable support value over short-range carries.
Choose by mode rules
Mode rules matter as much as raw damage. Benjamin is valuable because he changes the economy, but that is exactly why he is the wrong default for CHIMPS planning. CHIMPS disables bonus income and selling, so a hero choice should be judged by damage, support, control, and ability timing instead of cash generation.
Boss, freeplay, and Paragon planning often reward a different mindset. Economy and late utility become more important, so Benjamin can be reasonable outside CHIMPS, and Geraldo can become attractive when you are comfortable placing shop items, timing buffs, and using Paragon Power Totems as part of a late-game plan.
- Normal beginner medals: pick the hero that stabilizes early rounds with the least fuss.
- CHIMPS: avoid income-first reasoning and pick damage, support, or control instead.
- Boss and long economy games: Benjamin can help if the defense survives while income ramps.
- Paragon-focused runs: Geraldo is useful only if you actively plan around his shop and totems.
When Etienne is the right answer
Etienne is not picked only for personal damage. His major practical value is simplifying camo coverage for the whole defense once he reaches the relevant level. That can save money, crosspath pressure, or Monkey Village space on maps where the main damage towers would otherwise need separate camo support.
The mistake is expecting Etienne to replace every other support job. Camo visibility is not the same as lead damage, purple coverage, ceramic cleanup, or MOAB-class damage. If DDTs are the problem, Etienne can help with the camo half, but the defense still needs DDT-compatible damage and enough control.
- Use Etienne when many towers need camo and a single Village is awkward or expensive.
- Do not use Etienne as an excuse to ignore lead, black-bloon rules, or MOAB damage.
- Pair camo support with the Bloon Counter checklist if DDTs are leaking.
- Treat UCAV-style damage as part of a plan, not the whole late-game defense.
When synergy heroes beat generalists
Some heroes are strongest when the whole build is planned around them. Striker Jones makes more sense when Bomb Shooters and Mortar Monkeys are central to the strategy. Obyn Greenfoot is easier to justify when Magic Monkeys or Druid-style plans are already part of the defense. Gwendolin fits fire and grouped-bloon pressure better than a random tower pile that does not use her strengths.
Synergy heroes are not bad beginner choices, but they ask for a clearer plan. If you buy Striker and then build no explosives, or buy Obyn and then scatter unrelated towers, the hero is no longer solving a focused job.
- Pick Striker Jones when Bomb Shooter or Mortar Monkey upgrades are core to the run.
- Pick Obyn when the defense is already leaning into Magic Monkeys or Druids.
- Pick Gwendolin when grouped bloons, fire-based damage, and ability timing fit the map.
- Skip synergy heroes when you do not know which towers they are meant to support.
Do not start with high-micro heroes
Advanced heroes can be excellent, but they are not always the best first unlock. Geraldo and Corvus-style plans ask the player to manage more actions while still reading rounds, placing towers, timing abilities, and avoiding leaks. That extra ceiling is useful only if you are ready to use it.
A practical unlock order is not about permanent strength. It is about how much value you get while learning. Pick one simple early hero, one support hero, and then add a high-micro or late-game hero when you already understand why the run needs it.
- Use simple heroes while learning round checks and tower roles.
- Unlock high-micro heroes when you are ready to manage items, spells, or frequent ability timing.
- If a hero makes you miss leaks because you are managing too much, it is too early for that run.
- Return to complex heroes for boss, challenge, and advanced-map planning.
Common hero choice mistakes
The most common mistake is picking a hero for reputation instead of a job. A strong hero can still fail if the map does not support its range, the mode disables its main advantage, or the rest of the defense does not match its buffs.
A better habit is to write the hero's job in one sentence before placing it. If that sentence is vague, choose a simpler hero or open the tower and bloon guides first.
- Picking Benjamin in CHIMPS because he is strong in normal economy modes.
- Picking Sauda on maps where she cannot cover enough track time.
- Picking Etienne and forgetting that camo support does not pop lead by itself.
- Picking a synergy hero without building the towers that receive the synergy.
- Treating a tier list as more important than placement, mode rules, and round checks.

FAQ
Common follow-up questions
Who is the best hero in BTD6 for beginners?
Sauda is usually the easiest beginner carry on bend-heavy maps, while Quincy is the safest low-friction starter when placement is less obvious. Etienne is a strong next choice if camo support is the problem you keep running into.
Is Benjamin good in CHIMPS?
Benjamin should not be your default CHIMPS pick because CHIMPS disables bonus income. Use him in modes where economy is allowed, and choose damage, support, or control for CHIMPS runs.
Should I buy Geraldo early?
Buy Geraldo early only if you want to manage his shop actively. He has strong utility and Paragon planning value, but he is less beginner-friendly than a simple damage or support hero.
Is Etienne enough for DDTs?
Etienne helps with camo coverage, but DDTs also require lead-compatible, black-compatible, fast MOAB-class damage and enough control. Use him as part of the DDT answer, not the whole answer.
